833 East Hanging Atrium Sculpture
Client: Irgens Development, Milwaukee, WI
Media: Copper tubes, LED strips, stainless steel wire, aluminum end caps
Date: March 2016
Project: Create a suspended atrium sculpture for a newly constructed office high-rise in downtown Milwaukee
Challenges: This was our most technically challenging project to date in regards to form, fabrication, lighting and installation. We had to design and install the sculpture around multiple spatial constraints.
Solutions: Wrote a computer program to determine placement of each module within the structure, to ensure that the sculpture wouldn’t overlap outside of its spatial constraints. Designed custom hardware ensure modules are joined together at specific angles and remain structurally sound.
Pieces Created: 300-custom perforated copper tubes, internally lit with LED strips, held in a tensegrity formation with stainless steel cable and custom-designed hardware
