MENOMONEE VALLEY PARK PAVILION
The design and construction of a secluded pavilion located at the interface of a wildlife reclamation area and an aging industrial corridor in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, provided a low-cost catalyst for urban renewal. The pavilion also created a testing ground for the development of twelve unique building systems. Many are wall systems used to enclose a secure storage space at the base of the pavilion, and others are canopy structures used to cover an open-air setting for picnics and educational talks.
This project was designed by Kevin Kinney, Paul Mattek, and Kyle Talbott, founding partners of DF, in collaboration with Barkow Leibinger Architects, Andrew Manto, Alex Marshall, Bryant Mosconi, Erik Hancock, Chris Bach, Sarah Freidel, Ian Thomas, Cat Pham, Ellen Anderson, Jacqueline Dupre, Tom Joy, Aubrey Davidson, Erin Lawrence, Samantha Lager, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture.

Nuanced use of Digital Modeling enabled highly efficient use of inexpensive materials to achieve a customized, elaborate effect.

Beam calculations and drawings developed simultaneously with design, providing designers, clients, and fabricators immediate feedback.

Pointed use of prototyping and pre-assembly maximized accuracy and lowered cost.

Custom wood siding was digitally designed to optimize limited material resources.
