RePURPOSED FLOORING

Concept, Design and Fabrication by Jonathan Goldstein

After salvaging several hundred lineal feet of beautiful maple, tongue and groove flooring, we set to work on making beautiful, useful things with this rather unyielding material. Two projects, in particular, presented an opportunity to explore the potential re-use of this flooring.

LOW-TECH COMPLEXITY: GATE PANEL

In the first project, we needed a strong, weather-resilient material to serve within an existing fence gate. In order to lighten the overall panel and generate something interesting that would signal this flooring’s second life, the wood was deeply scored both horizontally and vertically. Then intermittent pieces were selectively removed to create a highly textured pattern. Further measures were to deployed to improve weather-resistance. As the existing gate frame and hinges were re-used, this highly customized, unique project cost less than $10 in materials.

SECOND-LIFE RAILING

In the second project, the customer wanted to replace a rickety, ugly, and perfunctory stair railing. In addition to the repurposed flooring, we used construction site railing anchors and nylon electrical conduit clips to make this the MacGyver of stair railings (without the mullet).
