CLEAN AIR TREK EXHIBIT @ DISCOVERY WORLD AT PIER WISCONSIN
Honored by the Milwaukee Buisness Journal as “Green Education Program of the Year” (2010).
Discovery World is a 120,000-square foot facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin that includes interactive science, technology and freshwater exhibits, learning labs, theaters, television and audio studios, and fresh and saltwater aquariums.
As part of their commitment to exploring the intersection of sustainability and economy, Discovery World commissioned Design Fugitives to create an exhibit that highlights the fundamentals of ECO-DRIVING without falling prey to the clichés typical to uncritical, pop-environmentalism. Additional challenges included the fact that the client wished to situate this exhibit in a difficult circulation route, under an existing stairway and catwalk.

This exhibit will house various items related to achieving healthier air quality, including air monitoring equipment, a working model of an internal combustion engine, and an “eco-driving” simulator. The current design involves 40 light steel mesh “trees,” stretched between floor and ceiling plates. Flexible conduit vines climb up the trees, draping on the underside of the existing catwalk, terminating in blooms of light. Other items included are existing museum components (e.g.: “bamboo” tubes) integrated at the client’s request.
